Portfolio | Mentorship Platform
The Process
Illustrated below is the approach I used for this project.
01 – Understand
Mentorship is “the advice and help provided by a mentor to a less experienced person over a period of time, especially as part of a formal programme in a company” (Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries).
I recognised the need for more mentorship in the corporate sector after I completed my Advanced Research Report for my BA Honour degree at Unisa. The research focused on intergenerational communication in the workplace and highlighted issues that, according to my findings, may be solved through a thoroughly designed mentorship platform.
This case study proposes a mentorship platform for graduates who are new in the working environment, to advise and help them navigate their way through the corporate world.
02 – Research
I went through the literature review chapter of my Advanced Research Report, to summarise intergenerational communication issues that were highlighted by other academic authors.
Key take-outs from the surveys and interviews that can be solved through a mentorship platform:
- Graduates are not always sure of what is expected of them
- Graduates do not always feel free to interact with managers
- Graduates do not have a clear career path
- Managers are always busy, but often willing to interact with graduates
03 – Analysis
User profile
04 – Design
The designs below are a first draft. Further iterations of the design would be guided by the results from the formative usability tests.
05 – Usability Testing
If I had the opportunity to do formative usability testing, I would continuously do the following tests on low-fidelity wireframes:
- An expectancy test to evaluate the mental model of the users
- A reverse card sort to evaluate how the users would like the content to be organised
- A performance test to evaluate how users would navigation around the platform
Once the formative usability tests on the low-fidelity wireframes yield positive results, high-fidelity prototypes would be created and another round of formative usability testing would be done.
06 – Implement
As soon as the design objectives are met and design decisions are validated, developers would implement this mentorship platform.
07 – Usability Testing
Once the platform is implemented, I would do a free exploration type of summative usability test to evaluate the actual usage of the platform and validate if the platform has accomplished the intended goals.
